How do you make a pet portrait from a picture?

Dogs are a painter’s dream subjects, but capturing their realism can be challenging. It’s important to find the right reference, sketch, and paint in layers to capture your pet’s personality and soulfulness. Whether you’re an experienced painter or just starting out, these steps can help you create a watercolor portrait of your favorite furry friend.

GET YOUR REFERENCE

It’s essential to find a good quality, clear and well-lit photo of your subject. This will help you get a feel for their shapes, proportions and face shape. If possible, try to meet your pet in person and take a few photos with different lighting conditions. You can also use a photo editing program to remove the background and concentrate on painting your pet’s face and details.

START SKETCHING

Before you begin your watercolor, it’s a good idea to sketch out your subject with pencil directly onto the paper. This can speed up the painting process and ensure that your drawing is accurate. If you are uncomfortable sketching freehand, you can use a piece of tissue paper over your sketch to trace out the lines.

PAINT THE MAIN PARTS

To make your pet’s eyes pop, map out the dark tones and mid tones with a burnt sienna color, then layer in the highlights. The same technique can be used for the nose, mouth and whiskers.
